Opera often presents stories of great emotions, and in our performance, this is the central theme. The jester Rigoletto fears a curse that ultimately leads to his daughter Gilda sacrificing her life for a ruthless duke. Rodolfo pretends, in vain, to be jealous so that his beloved Mimi won’t die of tuberculosis. Romeo and Juliet choose to take their own lives for the sake of love rather than uphold their families’ honor. Zerbinetta explains that passionate love and tragedy strike both rich and poor alike when the heart cannot understand itself. It is the curse of love.
